In general, how do the new labs work?

The new 207 labs will have PCs at each station. The lab work will in part be done on the PC via the web interface. At the end of each lab session, the students will print out a summary (worksheet) of their lab work on the lab printer. This will be initialed by the lab instructor and turned in with the lab report. This document will replace the 'cover sheet' from previous years.

Ok, more specifics please.

The lab manuals will be located online at cityphysics.org. Students upon begninning the lab should navigate to this page (there is a shortcut on the desktop of each PC). Then, they will need to login. The login credentials are as follows. Each station has a 2 digit number: 01 to 13. Each section has a letternumber code, BB1, MM4 for example. The username to login is section - station. The password is the same thing. So, for the case of station 04 in section BB3, the login item would be:

  • Username: bb3-04
  • Password: bb3-04
After successful login, the top menubar of the page should display the login information. It is imperative that each station is correctly signed in. Walk around the lab during the experiment and verify that indeed each station is correctly logged in.

**For special sections: PP1 and ECP will be the section names.**

The TA Page

If you log in with TA credentials, there will be another button visible on the front page. It will take you to a TA page that shows a table of the current progress of each station. Use this page to monitor the groups globally and identify problem stations before they get too far behind. This page can be accessed from any computer, however, there is an intended TA station located directly next to the printer. That computer is for you to use during the lab if needed.

Worksheets

The worksheets contain a summary of all of major datapoint from an experiment. It is meant to serve mostly as a record that the student was indeed present and performed the lab work. It can be printed from each computer.

Technical Details

The computer network in the lab is called Physics UG Lab. The password should be saved on the computers. If this network does not function, then there is also the CCNY WIFI network. This will require a student from each group to login via the gateway.

Problems

If problems arise during a lab, please don't hesitate to contact J. Hedberg or C. Telesford. There will be printouts of the labs and blank worksheets in the file cabinet under the printer if the network for some reason is not complying. PDFs of the labs will also be available on the lab PCs.
